Mannes Sounds 2020 Festival
May 7 at 7:00 pm
This year, Mannes Sounds 2020 Festival celebrates “European Women Composers Through the Centuries.” The program pays tribute to several talented and determined women who persevered against societal norms and other pressures to express their creativity in musical composition. The concert features works by the Italian composer Anna Bon; the Austrian Marianne von Martinez (a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart); Germans Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn, whose talents took a back seat to their husband and brother, respectively, during their lives; and Ethel Smyth, an English composer who also worked for women’s suffrage. Music by Polish composer/violinist Grazyna Bacewicz and the Georgian Meri Davitashvili, as well as selections by such present-day composers as Kaija Saariaho of Finland and Aleksandra Vrebalov of Serbia help round out the program. In addition, the audience will hear a work by the young Bulgarian composer/pianist Lora Al-Ahmad, who is currently studying composition at Mannes and whose works have been performed with success in Europe and the US.
Free of charge, limited seating. Reserve here.
